Brendan Smith, PhD
Brendan currently works as Head of China Affairs for the Research and Project Development Division at the London School of Economics (LSE). He is responsible for the development and delivery of the School’s strategy on mainland China – strategic partnership development with leading Chinese universities and research institutions, management of research and training projects, management of LSE extensive relations with government agencies and major corporates in China, and development of the large expatriate and Chinese alumni on mainland China.
Dr. Smith has over 10 years work experience in and with China, including two years at the training academy at the Chinese Foreign Ministry, where he taught international relations and law to current and future Chinese officials. He has also consulted for several years with foreign, mainland Chinese and Hong Kong companies on developing business opportunities in China in port development, IT, research, and online media. He has been involved in the founding and development of one of China’s largest online finance and economics media blogs –Chinavalue.net. Dr. Smith features regularly on Chinese and foreign media (CCTV – China Central TV, BBC, RTE, Irish Times, Irish Business Post) on the economic and political changes in China.
Dr. Smith completed his post-doctorate in 2000 at Harvard University, his PhD on negotiation and treaty-making at the LSE in 1999, an MSc in European Studies at the LSE in 1996, and graduated with first class honours in Law and Political Science and Sociology form the National University of Ireland, Galway in 1995.
